MAYOR GILMORE MAKES FREE EMERGENCY CELL PHONES AVAILABLE FOR SENIORS

(HAMILTON) - Mayor Glen D. Gilmore today announced that Hamilton senior citizens and disabled persons are once again eligible to receive a free cell phone for use in emergencies under a popular township program. "The cell phone giveaway has already handed out over seven hundred phones to meet initial demand and now we are able to open the enrollment lists again for this very valuable service," said Mayor Gilmore.

"When seconds count in an emergency, access to these phones means that senior citizens can get help fast!" said the Mayor.

"The phones will continue to be distributed for free, " said Mayor Gilmore, "We will provide the phone, a battery and a charger. There is no charge for the emergency service."

Mayor Gilmore noted that the phones will be used solely for 9-1-1 emergency calls. "These phones have been specially programmed to allow access to the cellular network for 9-1-1 calls only," he said, "Normal calls will still have to be made on a customer's regular phone service."
"The Township has been providing this program in March of 2002 and the initial response was overwhelming," noted the Mayor.
Under the 9-1-1 cellular system, calls placed for emergency services are received by the nearest State Police Tower. The State Police then identify where the call is coming from and notify the local authorities that help is needed. The local dispatcher then assigns the police, fire or ambulance services needed. "It's important to tell the dispatcher where you are calling from when using these phones," the Mayor cautioned, "Unlike regular phone calls which are automatically traced by the system, cellular calls require the caller to give their location in order to efficiently dispatch services."

Phones may be reserved by calling the Hamilton Township Senior Center at 890-3686 or the Crime Prevention Unit of the Hamilton Police Division at 581-4033. Pickup of reserved phones will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 pm until 3 pm.
